Nitro High School Becomes First in West Virginia to Launch Skyll Online Safety Curriculum

West Virginia has become the first state in the nation to partner with Skyll, an innovative company that helps students build the skills they need to stay safe and make smart decisions online. Nitro High School is leading the way as the first school in the state to roll out the new Skyll curriculum.

Keeping Students Safe Extends Beyond the Classroom

The program — which supports the federally mandated Children’s Internet Protection Act — was introduced to Nitro High students this week. Unlike traditional online safety lessons, Skyll — in partnership with Safe Surfin Foundation, uses interactive, story-based learning that puts students at the center of the action.

Students become the main character in a digital story, making choices that affect the outcome of the game. Each decision challenges them to think critically about real-world online risks, including scams, sextortion, bullying, misinformation, and AI manipulation.

“I’m invested in the story. I NEED to know what happens,” said one Nitro High student.

Nearly all students agreed that they were more aware of the harm caused by posting hurtful comments and less likely to share private information or photos online.

Founded by experts in online safety, Skyll works closely with schools, law enforcement, and policymakers to build interactive tools that prepare students for the realities of digital life. What began as a way to teach kids how to spot scams and resist online pressure has grown into a broader mission — helping students develop essential life skills such as conflict resolution, decision-making, and financial responsibility.

“I really like it!  It’s engaging and fun.” said another NHS student.

Nitro High School’s early adoption of Skyll marks an important step forward for digital education in West Virginia. By leading this statewide initiative, Nitro students are not only learning to protect themselves online but also setting an example for how technology and education can work together to build safer, smarter digital citizens for the future.
